Cedar split rail fence, Colorado Springs area

Paragon Fence Co installs cedar split rail fences all over Colorado Springs and out on the bigger lots in Black Forest, Monument, Peyton and Woodland Park. We've built 3-rail split rail in Black Forest, and I build 2-rail too. Split rail marks a property line, frames a driveway or closes in a pasture, and you still get the whole view. Every post goes at least 30 inches deep. That's my own standard. Your free estimate shows real numbers for the whole run.

What I do

  • 2-rail and 3-rail cedar split rail fences

  • Mortised cedar posts at least 30 inches deep

  • 10-foot cedar rails

  • Wire mesh along the rails for dogs

  • Property lines and long acreage runs

  • Sloped and uneven ground

  • Gates hung on an added 6x6 cedar post

  • Old fence tear-out and haul-away

How I build it

  1. Walk the line with you. We'll talk about where the fence runs, gates, slope and what your HOA allows. Confirming the property line is on you, so grab your plat or survey before I come out.

  2. Written estimate. Rails, length, gates, mesh and tear-out. Every piece gets a real number, and you'll know when we can start.

  3. 811 before we dig. We get public utility lines marked first. 811 doesn't mark private lines like sprinklers, a well line or a line to a barn, so show us where yours run.

  4. Posts go in right. I use mortised cedar posts and set every one at least 30 inches deep. That's my own standard. Each post goes in plumb and in line, in tamped gravel and dirt instead of concrete. Here's why. A concrete collar that comes up to the surface can trap water against a wood post. Gravel and tamped dirt let that water drain off, which helps slow rot where the post meets the ground.

  5. Rails go in. The 10-foot cedar rails seat right into the mortises, section by section, and follow the lay of the land.

  6. Walkthrough and cleanup. We walk the finished fence together. Then we clean up, and if the old fence is part of the job, we haul it off.

Why Paragon

Built for big lots. We build split rail on acreage, like our 3-rail job in Black Forest. On a long run across open ground, a straight line is what makes split rail look good. So I take my time laying it out.

Posts set to drain. Every post goes at least 30 inches deep. That's my standard on every split rail job. The posts sit in gravel and dirt, so water can drain away from the wood instead of sitting against it.

A carpenter builds it. I've been doing carpentry for over 10 years. I build every fence like it's going around my own land.

Service area

I build fences all over Colorado Springs, including Broadmoor and Old Colorado City, plus Fountain, Security-Widefield, Monument, Peyton, Falcon, Black Forest, Woodland Park, Manitou Springs and Cripple Creek.

FAQs

How much does a cedar split rail fence cost in Colorado Springs?

It depends on the length of the run, how many rails, gates, mesh, the ground and what's coming out. I price it after I walk your line, and the estimate shows real numbers.

Should I get a 2-rail or 3-rail split rail fence?

A 2-rail fence sits lower and reads as a simple property line. A 3-rail fence stands taller and looks more finished. I build both and will help you pick based on what the fence needs to do.

Will a split rail fence keep my dog in?

Not by itself, because the gaps between the rails are wide open. We can add wire mesh along the inside of the rails, and it keeps the open look from a distance.

Is split rail fence good for horses?

It looks great around a pasture, but horses lean on, rub and chew wood rails, so I'm careful about using split rail as the only thing holding them. For horses, take a look at our Buckley steel horse fence, and we can talk about what fits your property.

How does cedar split rail hold up in Colorado weather?

Cedar heartwood naturally resists rot, and the open rails let wind and blowing snow pass through. I set the posts in gravel and dirt so water can drain away from the wood, which helps slow rot at the ground line. No wood fence is maintenance-free, so check for loose rails after a hard winter.

Should I get a split rail fence or a privacy fence?

Split rail marks a line and keeps the view, which fits acreage, driveways and property lines. A privacy fence blocks the view and closes in your yard. Plenty of properties use both, with privacy near the house and split rail out along the land.
